While undergoing orthodontic treatments, it is important to keep your braces or other appliances in good condition. Often, certain foods can cause problems. We have provided the following lists of foods to avoid while you are receiving orthodontic treatments. Hard Foods
Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Examples of hard foods to avoid include:
- Ice
- Nuts
- Hard taco shells
- French bread crust/rolls
- Corn on the cob
- Apples (unless cut into small pieces)
- Bagels
- Chips
- Jolly ranchers
- Pizza crust
- Uncooked carrots
Sticky Foods
Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Examples of sticky foods to avoid include:
- Gum
- Licorice
- Toffee
- Tootsie Rolls
- Caramels
- Starburst
Sugary Foods
Sugary foods can lead to tooth decay and related problems. Examples of sugary foods to avoid include:
- Cake
- Ice Cream
- Cookies
- Pie
- Candy
- Soda
- Sweetened tea
- Gatorade
- Kool-Aid
- Other sugary drinks
We also recommend that you avoid biting your nails, chewing on pencils and pens, and chewing on foreign objects. You should also check your braces regularly for bent or loose wires and brackets. If your braces are loose or broken, please contact our office immediately.
